Hawaii (Day 3)

We had another wonderful and packed day. The morning started out just a bit later than yesterday- around 4:40 this time, with a little dozing until 5!

We played in the room, and then Agnieszka and Ella took a stroller walk to the beach to see the sunrise

Not too shabby.

Afterwards, Agnieszka went back to the conference, while Daniel and the kids headed back to the beach and pool. Chris came out to help with kid juggling until Agnieszka returned from the conference.

At noon, we checked  out of our beautiful hotel and took a few last pictures there.

Auggie was especially sad to leave the resort because he had already  made some friends...fortunately, they were from Berkeley!

Next, we set off for North Shore. The plan was to have Ella catch up on a much needed nap and do some sightseeing before getting back to Waikiki. Turns out both kids needed the rest.

The drive was beautiful.

We first went to Laniakea Beach, to see sea turtles (they were in hiding) and then drove a little further to experience the North Shore waves at Waimea Bay Beach Park.  The water was perfect and Auggie had a wonderful time jumping waves at the shoreline. Ella initially looked on cautiously, but eventually turned her attention to the park’s local population of chicken and roosters.

After a fair amount of hot sun and sand, we drove back to Waikiki, stopping briefly for pineapple juice and milkshakes.  The plan was to meet up with Chris at Ala Moana beach park for the sunset, and we eventually got there after a haphazard detour through the overwhelming Ala Moana Center, which turned out to be the largest mall any of us had ever visited.

We finished our evening at Ala Moana beach, with kids happily finding coral in the sand and a beautiful sunset setting behind us.

Our last adventure of the day was the process of checking into our Downtown condo. It involved a stop in the lobby to pick up our keys and parking badge, a drive up to the tenth floor for our parking spot, an elevator to the 3rd floor to the lobby.... so that we could get to the elevator that would take us to our condo on the 28th floor.

When we got there, our key wouldn’t work, the kids were melting down, and when our key finally did work (after some persistence and a lot of patience), we nearly stepped on a cockroach on the floor. Auggie declared that he didn’t like the place (we have to agree it’s not the Kahala).  Not much later,  Agnieszka got locked out of the condo after her key literally snapped inside the keyhole when she came back from picking up milk at the store.  Ella was very unhappy with the absence of a bathtub (but thrilled to have milk warmed up in a microwave after 3 days of refrigerated milk).

Eventually the kids fell asleep and Agnieszka noted the lack of reviews on this particular Airbnb (a little too late).  But, we did manage to take in the beautiful views from the 28th floor. We are looking forward to a morning walk to one of the many local bakeries  before setting out to explore more of this beautiful island.
