To celebrate Auggie's birthday (and try out our first family vacation as a family of four), we decided to do a road trip with the cousins to Legoland. We started a day early so as to break the long driving day into two and see some of coastal California.
After a fairly uneventful drive - except for a brief sketchy encounter on a Salinas playground being oddly guarded by a homeless man -we arrived at our hotel in Pismo Beach. The hotel had a playground, hot tub and swimming pool....so we almost did not see the beach. The kids absolutely love the hot tub (clearly having inherited Agnieszka's suspicion of cold water) and were very happy to then take hot baths back at the hotel to 'wash off the hot tub'.
In the evening, we had dinner in a yummy sushi restaurant, where Auggie ate mostly tempura and Ella ate an entire cooked salmon filet. Below is a rare picture of both kids sitting quietly in the restaurant (albeit, they are sitting on their knees and staring out of the restaurant window).
Our next stop was the beach! We had planned to do many beach stops and brought all our beach gear. We soon realized, however, that the beach was incredibly windy and chilly. The wind swept the sand directly at Ella's eye level, so we had to stick to the wet part of the sand, which Ella proceeded to eat and wipe in her eyes. Nonetheless, it was absolutely beautiful and we managed to catch an incredible sunset. The children were not happy to leave.
The next day, on our drive to Legoland, we stopped at Santa Monica pier. It was still windy (and a little chilly), but the kids loved sitting in the warm sand.
